Fanzines- Qualitative Research
How might fanzines help short film producers build larger audiences/ communities?
Fanzines can help short film producers expand and build larger audiences as they can identify the type of genre of film these individuals favourite and want to be shown. If producers are able to recognise and identify the wants of their audience they will be able to increase the amount of people they receive watching their films.

Qualitative research
Qualitative research is used to obtain information of opinions, views and motivations. This type of research is used to gain more detailed data rather than Quantitative research which is based on the numerical information and statistics.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Advantages:
- More complex and detailed data collected
- Candidates can be studied in more depth
- Fewer restrictions and assumptions
Disadvantages:
- Time consuming
- More difficult to determine the reliability and validity of linguistic information
- An increase in subjectivity involved in analysing the data
- "Data overload"- opened questions
Methods:
- Individual observations
- Focus groups
- In-depth interviews
- Case studies
- Secondary research
Quantitative research
Quantitative research is when numerical data is processed and obtained.
Quantitative research is easier to identify and define as there will be a decrease in the range of information collected rather than Qualitative research.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Quantitative research is easier to identify and define as there will be a decrease in the range of information collected rather than Qualitative research.
Advantages:
- Collects numerical facts and information
- Able to analyse the data gathered
- Can be used to test hypotheses because of its ability to measure information using statistics
Disadvantages:
- Might not be detailed or suited well enough to the criteria
- Context of the study may be ignored
- A large sample of the population will have to be studied for more accurate results
Methods:
- Surveys- mail, online, handouts
- Questionnaires- closed questions
- Observation
- Scales
- Secondary data

Box Office figures
Short film names:
She
CyberWorld
Haunted Castle
Box Office:
£10,000
$11.2M
$13.7M
Rating:
9.0
6.6
5.2
Votes:
10
365
421
In conclusion the Short film that received the most votes was 'Haunted Castle' with 421. However this short film has the lowest rating out of the productions that i have chosen at 5.2. With 'CyberWorld' following shortly after at a rating of 6.6 and finally 'She' at 9.0. This short film made $13.7M from their audience viewing this. It is interesting to see the results of the productions as 'She' only made £10,000 although it was rated the highest although it has only been voted 10 whereas the other two short films are 300+. Looking at the votes that 'She' receive in comparison to the other productions; this film might not have been viewed as much as these. The rating is significantly higher and more positive than 'CyberWorld' and 'Haunted Castle' which leads me to believe that 'She' has had less views than these other chosen production films.
Collecting this data is a form of Quantitative research as this material is simple and numerical based. These figures are significant in collecting within my research as they allow me to identify the names of the Short films as well as the Box office figures, ratings and the amount of views each piece has. It is interesting to be able to see the different figures of the Short films as they are all different and vary in sizes as well as their popularity however they have all had some sort of success in being broadcasted to the audience. Collecting Box office material from these shorts is important as it will better my understanding about the amount of money you could potentially receive from creating a piece of work such as these. Receiving a significant and high amount such as these can develop and assist you in furthering your work and creating new and improved films.
It is important to identify Box Office figures as this can help me acknowledge how much my film will cost altogether to create. I need to be able to identify all areas of the pre-production process as well as equipment, insurance etc that will be required in order for my short film to take place.
